Construction Has Begun on Miami Circle Park

August 13, 2010 by Lucas Lechuga
Miami Circle Park construction

While walking the parameter of Icon Brickell yesterday, I noticed that construction on Miami Circle Park had already begun.  For those of you who don't know, Miami Circle Park is located directly north of Icon Brickell along the Miami River.  The purpose of the park is to preserve a 2,000 year old Tequesta Indian site that was discovered in 1998.  Brickell is in dire need for green space and this will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

why bother

The historical value of this site is questionable or even comical. But I like the fact that they are building a waterfront park in the excuse of preserving a “Circle”. We need more water front parks. So no complaints.

Miami Beach is no longer just for club kids, so it’s safe to visit again – briefly

CovershotOnce upon a time, Miami Beach meant nightlife, midnight dinners, and liquor-fueled 4:00 a.m. frolics at clubs like Salvation – at least that’s what it meant for me.

Salvation, of course, is now an Office Depot. Some of my former playmates might mourn the loss of sacred nightclub space, but at this stage of life, an Office Depot is a lot more important to the texture of the daily routine than one more dank nightclub.

Eventually youthful degenerates grow up and quit drinking and smoking and keeping late hours. Either that or they die young.

Most of us managed the transition and grew up, and Miami Beach, to an unexpected extent, has grown up too, helped along by money, Art Basel, and the sense that the party might be, if not over, waning a bit.

The fact is that most truly hip kids now avoid the Beach like the plague. Instead they head for Biscayne Times territory: downtown Miami, Wynwood, the Design District, and the Upper Eastside.

In an odd way, the phenomenon reflects the experience of many BT readers who once lived in the emergent Miami Beach or spent copious amounts of time cavorting there. You survived the South Beach craziness, found your perfect partner, moved across the bay, bought a home, started a family, and haven’t looked back. Or even been back. Too many blurry memories, too much traffic congestion, too many parking hassles, too high a price to pay — in stores, restaurants, and elsewhere.

Miami Beach may no longer be cool for young hipsters, but it has matured such that, more and more, there is great stuff for grownups to do while not getting ripped off by valets or dissed by surly waiters.

In short, it’s safe to go back to the Beach — at least for a short visit. It was always deeper than we all thought, and once you confront the city without a hangover, it’s sort of interesting.

Our heads and hearts (and wallets) remain faithful to the Biscayne Corridor, but now and then it’s fun to venture abroad.

That article is 10% true and 90% “I don’t live at the Beach, so it must not be cool.”

I hope they take care of the grass better then they go at South Pointe Park,

but yes, we need more parks in brickell, and this one will be one of the best due to it’s great location.

I am gald they are doing it

That park is an interesting story. It was purchased for millions, but nobody inspected the seawall. It came as a surprise to everybody that it actually need an new seawall. As if nobody in the dozens of agencies that were involved in the purchase and maintenance of the land could figure out the seawall was bad or where to get the money to fix it.
This Circle Park site will be leased to an electric billboard company when the new seawall gets damaged in a hurricane. The proceeds of the billboard fees will insure that this landmark is protected forever.

I welcome another park in the neighborhood, but dread the thought of having to dodge crazies on bicycles/skateboards &/or dog poop, while strolling there.

I dream with futility of a huge open space within Brickell along the lines of Bayfront/Margaret Pace/Simpson – even a much prettier and useful version of what is in Midtown would be great. But it’s too late for that. It’s really a shame. I have been living on Margaret Pace Park since May 2008, and despite our recent past – very huge issues with Dog Owners irresponsibility in keeping the park clean – the trash/waste situation has improved somewhat (although we have a long way to go to convert everyone to picking up after their dogs). Let’s hope Circle Park or MCP or whatever you want to call it (little tiny indigenous memorial), etc., doesn’t become an outlet for those residents too lazy to give huge respect for the community and therefore deposit into the park their waste (animal and human), litter/trash, contribute to foul oders, and deploy mediocre wad-shooting graffitti art – unless it’s graffitti along the lines of Erni Valdes’ work at El Mercadito at Midtown. Beautiful stuff.

if there’s going to be graffitti (sic?) in this town, i support team robbo. suck it banksy.

John — Those types of problems/people are everywhere in urban areas, but it doesn’t help that downtown Miami is a huge rental colony right now. As with the buildings themselves, people are less respectful of things they don’t own, whether it’s a $50 rental car or a $3 million condo lobby.

downtown coral gables has plenty of residents and dogs, but very few problems with failure to clean up. it does happen, just not very often.

I have noticed the poop problem in Miami, what is the deal with that? It was a big turn off for me and my lady when we had to dodge dog poop with every step at “Luxury Condo”. I know other cities have some issues with this but In Miami it seems to be much worse than other places I’ve visited. People down there just don’t give a damn and the maint at these condos don’t care to clean up. That is disgusting and a huge turn off.

makes me think, many foreigners living here are wealthy and accustomed to the “help” taking care of these issues. unfortunately, they really dont pay for any “help” so it goes unattended. also, because of the below market rates on buys and rentals in the past few years, many folks who would not live in a wealthier environment have been in the position to do so. many of these folks used to live in areas where this behavior is commonplace-and thus still practice the same behavior today.

Lucas, just curious. do you own or rent? and if you bought, when and where?

Chill Pill

gables,
I’m curious too. Do you own or rent? Where do you live? What do you do for a living, if anything? What is your net worth?

Joe

Chill Pill — Hey, that was really clever!

(Not really.)

Chill Pill

Joe,
hey, I am kinda curious about you too… What’s your body mass index? Do you have any money? Did you ever buy a place of your own, and if yes, how did you manage to pull it off?

Joe

Chill Pill — Body mass index (BMI) is overrated for people, such as me, who work out. But if it helps you sleep, I’m in fine physical condition.

As I’ve said about 100 times, I’m not living in Miami right now (or, for that matter, in the United States), so, no, I haven’t bought a place in Miami yet. Since there are still 5,000-plus new condos available, I’m not worried about getting locked out of the market. Thanks for your concern, though (on both issues).

Joe

Chill Pill — Jokes aside, if you think it’s out of line to ask an r.e. broker if he/she rents or owns — especially an r.e. broker who is encouraging others to buy right now — then you have a weird set of ethics.

Chill Pill

Joe,
you only made me more curious with your replies…What’s up with the lack of patriotism? Which country do you reside in? Is it because you hate America, and if yes, why do you hate America? And, oh, yeah, how about the money? Do you have any? Like American money, not the funny money that you’d never get any Miami condo with…Do you have any girlfriend?

Chill Pill

Joe,
what do you mean by “jokes aside”? Just curious…

Joe

Chill Pill — Sorry, but I’m not going to feed any more trolls. I wasn’t the one who asked about Lucas’ current r.e. holdings (or lack thereof). I simply pointed out that it was a valid inquiry.

US Ethics Dept

Mr. Joe (or is this Senior Joe?), this is to let you know that ” no question which the questioner is not prepared to answer himself/herself can be deemed ethical”.
(“Ethics 101”)

Chill Pill

gables,
I knew you’d say that…)))
What work do you do? Can you provide numbers and attach some documentation to substantiate those claims?
How old are you?

gables

chill, if you already know the answers then why ask the questions? only an idiot asks questions when they already know the answer-rather inefficient use of ones time and energy.

seems to me i asked a very valid question of lucas, and even provided my own answer to such question as you noted in your ethics comment. not sure why that has you all in a tussel?

Joe

gables — It’s obvious your simple, and quite ethical/valid, question hit a nerve, if not with Lucas specifically, then with some other Realtard ®. It’s not exactly a secret that a huge number of r.e. types don’t exactly practice what they preach.

gables

joe, i really did not ask the question to put lucas in a corner. just very curious what and where a person in the RE condo business would buy a place over the past year or two. i have no problem with him renting-doing that myself. but if he did buy, was it brickell, downtown, pace park? curious what neighborhood he would choose for the longer term.

Chill Pill

Joe,
you wouldn’t know ethics if ethics hit you on your sloped forehead.
gables,
why would a loser who can’t afford to buy a dog house be so interested in other people’s buying preferences? I’m just curious…

chill, i dont know why you are so interested in my buying preferences. but you shouldn’t call yourself a loser in public-don’t you know that just degrades yourself? are you off your meds again? just curious.

Bill Weaver — I highly doubt this is The Ace. He was mostly, if not entirely, anti-Realtard ®.
