La Gorce Island
La Gorce Island is a guard-gated community located in Biscayne Bay, to the south of Normandy Isles, and just West of Allison Island. It is considered a part of the greater Miami city known as North Beach, and one of its most premier neighborhoods. La Gorce is home to a handful of celebrities who choose the island for its stunning waterfront views, exclusivity, and its expansive, luxury homes. Saturated with lush greenery, La Gorce Island is seen as a tropical oasis from the hustle and bustle of the city. Only a short drive to luxury shopping center Bal Harbour, minutes from Miami Beach, and in close proximity to the 79th Street Causeway, it is convenient to both the mainland and retail, restaurants, and nightlife of the Beaches. Surprise Lake marks the southern end of La Gorce Island, while the historic La Gorce Country Club stretches nearly the length of the island at its center. The Club, originally built in 1927, features tennis courts, swimming pool, state-of-the-art fitness center, full spa with massage, sauna, and steam room, and a children’s program, along with fine and casual dining, and various special event spaces. There’s no question as to why La Gorce Island is one of Miami’s most coveted neighborhoods, boasting a luxury island lifestyle, incredible homes, breathtaking views, and some of the most beautifully landscaped streets you’ll find anywhere in the world.
La Gorce Island was built in 1924 by Carl Fisher-owned, Miami Beach Bayshore Company. Mr. Fisher named the Island to honor his close personal friend, Dr. John Oliver LaGorce, President of the National Geographic Magazine Company. The streets were ceded to the City of Miami Beach in 1934, and then the Island was purchased by Frederick Maytag and his partner/General Manager, Mr. Quackenbush, in 1936. That purchase was carried out under the name LaGorce Island, Inc, and the development of the Island followed in that same year, including landscaping and the building of parkways. LaGorce Island, Inc. took full responsibility of the parkway maintenance until 1946, when sufficient lots had been sold and LaGorce Island Association, Inc. was born, which assumed the responsibility via assessments on property owners.
